蓼食う虫 About taste there can be no dispute.

■The famous saying, "About taste there can be no dispute," is a wise one.
It means that taste is a personal matter and if one person admires something which another hates, an argument should not arise.
What is good taste to one person may seem bad taste to another.
There can be no rules about taste.

What is beautiful to one may be ugly to another.

【訳】→有名なことわざ「蓼(たで)食う虫も好き好き/好みについては議論にならない」(About taste there can be no dispute.)は賢いものです。
好みは個人的なものであって、もしだれかが他の人が嫌いなものを賞賛しても、議論にはならないということです。
ある人には趣味の良いものでも別の人には悪趣味に見えるかも知れない。
好みには規則があり得ないのです。
ある人に美しいものも別の人には醜くいこともあるのです。

■Works which some critics consider masterpieces are for others trivial exercises, or worse. Hence the century old admonition and bit of wisdom, De gustibus non disputandum, “About taste there can be no dispute.” There is surely a certain wisdom in this saying, but it doesn't really explain much or help us have a deeper grasp of what art actually is or how it works on the mind and emotions.
Richey Novak: Me and the Big Bang: Confessions of a Modern-day Mystic, 163

■ Still, it must doubtless be said of paintings and art in general, as it is of other matters, that about taste there can be no dispute. The Romans discovered that and embodied it in Latin maxim.

■De gustibus non est disputandum
De gustibus non est disputandum is a Latin maxim meaning "In matters of taste, there can be no disputes" (literally, "There is no disputing of tastes").[1][2] Sometimes the phrase is expanded as De gustibus et coloribus... referring to tastes and colors.
The implication is that everyone's personal preferences are merely subjective opinions that cannot be "right" or "wrong", so they should never be argued about as if they were.
This phrase is misquoted in Act I of Anton Chekhov's play The Seagull. The character Shamrayev conflates it with the phrase de mortuis nil nisi bonum (in the alternate form: de mortuis, aut bene aut nihil: "of the dead, either [speak] good or [say] nothing"), resulting in "de gustibus aut bene, aut nihil", "Let nothing be said of taste but what is good".[3]
It is deliberately mistranslated in Laurence Sterne's The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gentleman, in which the narrator states, "De gustibus non disputandum est—that is, there is no disputing against Hobby-Horses; and for my part, I seldom do".
